Power BI, Tableau or AI? The Question Is Framed Wrong

Power BI or Tableau? Or would "something with AI" be better? It is the question we hear most often when an SME decides to start managing with data. The short answer is uncomfortable but honest: there is no best tool. There is a best tool for your case.

What each one does brilliantly

Power BI is unbeatable when your company already lives in the Microsoft ecosystem: it integrates naturally with Excel, Teams and SharePoint, its entry cost is among the lowest on the market, and the learning curve for a team fluent in Excel is gentle. It is, deservedly, the gateway to BI for most SMEs.

Tableau shines in visual exploration: when the daily work consists of investigating the data —not just consulting a dashboard—, its visual engine remains the benchmark. It is typically found in dedicated analytics teams and in organizations that prioritize freedom of exploration over cost per license.

Generative AI —the assistants that answer natural-language questions about your data— is the newcomer that promises to skip the dashboard altogether: you ask, it answers. Its potential is real, and both Power BI and Tableau already incorporate it. But there is a condition the marketing tends to omit: AI answers only as well as the data you feed it is organized. On scattered, inconsistent data, it only produces wrong answers with great confidence.

The right question is not "which one?" but "what for?"

In our projects, the choice is settled with four questions before looking at any comparison chart:

  • Which ecosystem do you already use? If your company works with Microsoft 365, starting anywhere else requires a very good justification. If your operation lives in Odoo, its native reports cover more than people usually assume.
  • Who will consume the data? A manager who looks at five indicators every Monday is not the same as an analyst who explores hypotheses daily.
  • What budget and what maturity do you have? The most powerful tool, underused, is the most expensive of all.
  • Is your data ready? This is the only knockout question. No tool —not even AI— fixes messy data. First the system and the processes; then, the visualization.

Our conclusion, with no favorite brand

We work mostly with Power BI because that is where cost, ecosystem and adoption curve converge for most of the SMEs we work with — and we combine it with Odoo's native reports when the question can be answered without leaving the system. But we have recommended other routes when the case called for it, and we will keep doing so: our loyalty is to the client's problem, not to a logo.

If you are facing this decision, the right order is: first organize your data, then define who needs to see what, and only then choose the tool. Doing it the other way around is the reason so many dashboards end up abandoned after three months.
